FAQs
How will Brampton’s independence impact residents?
Brampton City Council and staff will work with the province’s Transition Board, Mississauga, and Caledon to ensure no disruptions in service occur during the dissolution process. The City of Brampton commits to updating the public on a regular basis.
What is the difference between a two-tier municipality and a single tier?
In a two-tier municipality, the regional municipalities (i.e., The Region of Peel) often coordinate area-wide service delivery to all local municipalities. Public services are assigned to either municipality by legislation. Both municipalities may provide these services exclusively or non-exclusively within their geographical boundaries.
In a single tier municipality means a municipality (i.e., The City of Brampton) that does not form part of an upper-tier municipality for municipal purposes and assumes all municipal responsibilities set out under the Municipal Act and other Provincial legislation.
Why is Brampton advocating for its fair share?
Since the creation of the Region of Peel in 1974, Brampton has made significant contributions to infrastructure in Mississauga as their city grew to its borders during the past 30 years. Now that Brampton is the city in need of vital infrastructure, those investments must be recognized and reconciled.
What happens to staff at the Region?
The Region of Peel has provided a high level of service since its formation in 1974. Peel Region has established 12 principles that staff can use to assess how to proceed with previously approved projects and programs and how to prepare the 2024 budget. These decisions will be made in the public interest while having regard for the municipal restructuring, ensuring value for money, high quality efficient services and that other municipalities are not unreasonably impacted.
With an increase in municipal responsibility following dissolution, Brampton will be able to draw from this important pool of staffing resources to help deliver the same services locally that were delivered by Peel prior to dissolution.
