The City of Brampton is seeking community input regarding the proposed creation of a Tourism Municipal Services Corporation (MSC) as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance tourism and promote economic growth. This proposal is a key initiative resulting from the introduction of the Transient Accommodation Tax by the Province of Ontario, which allows municipalities to allocate funds to support tourism development.

On April 13, 2023, Brampton City Council approved the recommendation to implement a four per cent Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) and the creation of a Tourism MSC. This entity will be responsible for managing 50% of the MAT revenue to promote Brampton as a destination and support tourism activities aimed at boosting the local economy.

What is a Tourism MSC?

The Tourism MSC will serve as the City’s designated tourism entity, receiving 50 per cent of the MAT revenue. The MSC will work closely with the City to enhance Brampton’s tourism sector and focus on four key objectives:

  1. Engagement: Collaborating with tourism industry stakeholders to gather feedback and inform decisions regarding the use of MAT funds.

  1. Promotion: Researching and implementing promotional campaigns to attract visitors, businesses and events to Brampton.

  1. Development: Pursuing tourism product developments to improve the visitor experience.

  1. Attraction: Attracting business, sport, and cultural events that will draw new visitors to the City.
